Should I wait until after Christmas to secure a new role?

With Christmas just around the corner, it can often deter Candidates from continuing their job search when in fact, it’s can be a great time to secure a new role. Right now it's a real jobseeker's market with almost 1.3 million open job vacancies in the UK – there are more jobs available than ever. The unprecedented demand for skills has made it a candidate-led market and one which those looking for a new role can capitalise on.

Similarly, as inflation has hit historic highs, employees say their incomes have not kept up with rising household expenses. Often, the best way to negotiate a big pay increase comes with a new position.

So, why else should you secure a role in 2022?

1. Many organisations finalise their year’s budget during December, they will use this time to set aside a budget for future vacancies. Often, during this process a lot of organisations come across money that they will need to spend, or risk losing it and having their budgets cut for the following year. In a lot of cases, this means hiring new staff members before January.
2. Christmas is notoriously a very social and positive time of year. It’s great for bonding and building relationships with colleagues. Christmas parties and get togethers will give you the chance to get to know the other staff in a more informal setting.
3. Client facing roles will find December brilliant for introducing yourself and meeting them. People are often more relaxed and expect the visits and drops with gifts so are more open to seeing you.
4. In contrast, some businesses find December to be a quiet period so this will give you the opportunity to get your training done and build an understanding of the business before things pick up again.
