Balancing work & homelife in 2025

As September quickly looms, there are many parents out there who are dreading the return to school and the balancing issues it brings. Is it possible to manage both work and childcare successfully? And if so, what can you do to make it a little easier?

Balancing work and childcare has always been a challenge, but 2025 has brought its own mix of opportunities and obstacles. The lines between home life and work life are more blurred than ever, with flexible schedules and remote working now part of the norm in many industries. But even with all this flexibility, parents are still finding themselves in a constant juggle.

Childcare options have expanded over the last few years. Hybrid nursery schedules, more accessible wraparound school care, and even employer-supported childcare schemes are becoming commonplace. Many workplaces now provide childcare credits or have partnerships with local providers to help employees manage the costs, which, despite some improvements, remain significant.

If you are a working parent and are not utilising some of the below schemes, then do take a look at them in more detail:

• UK Government Tax-Free Childcare Scheme: Eligible working parents can claim up to £2,000 per year per child (or £4,000 for children with disabilities) towards childcare costs.

• Free Childcare Hours (England): From 2025, most working parents of children over nine months can access up to 30 hours of free childcare during term time.

• Employer-Supported Childcare Credits: Many companies now offer childcare subsidies or partnerships with local nurseries—check your HR benefits package.

• Wraparound Care Directories: Local authorities maintain updated lists of school clubs, holiday care, and short-notice providers.

• Apps to Try: Koru Kids, Bubble, and Care.com are popular in 2025 for on-demand childcare; Cozi and FamCal are useful for managing shared family schedules.

Flexible and hybrid working patterns mean many parents can now handle school runs, attend mid-morning assemblies, or simply be around for those little moments that used to be missed. But the flip side is that work often creeps further into home life. The emails don’t stop at 5pm, and the video calls can extend well into what used to be family time.

The challenge in 2025 isn’t just about finding time for both work and parenting—it’s about keeping those worlds from colliding too often.
What strategies are parents using to help maintain the balance?
• Structured flexibility: Setting clear “work blocks” and “family blocks” rather than trying to do both at once.

• Backup plans on standby: Whether it’s grandparents, neighbours, or emergency childcare services, having a safety net saves a lot of stress.

• Leveraging technology: AI-driven scheduling tools, shared family calendars, and automated reminders make coordination a bit easier.

• Being transparent with employers: Conversations about availability and realistic workloads are now far more accepted than in the past.

The reality is, that it’s still a balancing act - even with better policies and technology, the juggle is still real. There will be days where a meeting has to be taken with a child off-camera in the next room, or where work gets pushed to the evening after bedtime.

What’s different in 2025 is the mindset: many workplaces now see parenting not as a distraction but as part of the whole employee experience. And that shift—while not perfect—has made a huge difference. We have a few school hour roles on at the moment which you can check out on our website: https://bit.ly/41G5wOn
